FISHKILL . The Red Cross is assisting two adults and four children who were displaced by a fire.

Firefighters were called to a ranch house on Derick Drive in the Town of Fishkill at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday.

The homeowner had smelled smoke, opened the door to an attached garage and discovered the fire. Firefighters arrived on the scene three minutes later and knocked the fire down in 20 minutes, said Kevin Barry, a spokesman for the Rombout Fire Department.

No one was injured, but the family was displaced due to smoke and water damage. The garage suffered substantial damage and a minivan inside it was destroyed.

The Dutchess County Fire Investigation Team responded and determined that the blaze was accidental, he said.

Further information on the cause was not immediately available Tuesday.

Firefighters from the Hughsonville and Village of Fishkill fire departments assisted Rombout at the scene.
